The Joe Biden IQ question — what people are actually asking
Search "Joe Biden IQ" and you'll see a cluster of related queries: "Biden IQ score," "Biden cognitive test," "Biden dementia test," and similar. These are usually conflations — people use "IQ test" as a generic term for any cognitive evaluation, but the tests differ enormously in what they measure and why.
Three categories of cognitive instruments often get confused:
- IQ tests (WAIS-IV, Stanford-Binet, ICAR) — measure relative cognitive ability against age-matched peers; score 100 = average, SD = 15
- Cognitive screening tools (MoCA, MMSE) — screen for cognitive impairment (dementia, mild cognitive impairment), pass/fail style scoring
- Mental status exams — clinical interviews assessing orientation, memory, attention; not standardized scores
Biden has reportedly taken cognitive screening tools as part of routine medical examinations. He has not, to public knowledge, taken a clinical IQ test.
Why presidents don't take public IQ tests
Modern US presidents are not required to take or release IQ scores. The cognitive evaluation that occurs as part of an annual physical examination is conducted by the President's physician and typically uses the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) — a screening tool for early signs of dementia.
Biden's reported MoCA scores from White House physician communications have been publicly summarized but not released in full detail. The MoCA is a 30-point screening instrument:
- Scores 26–30: typically considered within normal range
- Scores 18–25: may indicate mild cognitive impairment, warrant further evaluation
- Scores below 18: suggest moderate to severe cognitive impairment
A passing MoCA score does not correspond to an IQ. A neurologist evaluates whether cognition is age-appropriate and screens for decline — completely different from measuring relative intelligence.

Biden's education and legal career
What we can verify about Biden's academic record:
- University of Delaware (1961–1965) — Bachelor's degree, double major in history and political science. Reportedly graduated 506th out of 688 in his undergraduate class.
- Syracuse University College of Law (1965–1968) — Juris Doctor. Reportedly graduated 76th out of 85.
- Admitted to the Delaware Bar in 1969
- Practiced law before entering politics
These class rankings have been widely cited in retrospective coverage. They suggest Biden was not at the top of his cohort academically — but bar admission alone confirms a level of cognitive functioning sufficient for licensed legal practice, which roughly corresponds to an IQ in the 110–125 range at minimum (the typical professional-license threshold).
Class rank is also a noisy indicator. Academic ranking reflects work habits, attendance, choice of courses, and family circumstances, not just raw cognitive ability.
Speech patterns vs cognition: the stuttering distinction
One frequent source of confusion in Biden coverage is the conflation of speech disfluency with cognitive impairment. Biden has spoken publicly about his lifelong stutter — a speech disorder, not a cognitive disorder. The two are entirely separate.
Peer-reviewed research on stuttering (e.g., Smith & Weber, 2017) consistently shows:
- Stuttering is a neurological speech disorder, not a marker of low intelligence
- People who stutter have IQ distributions indistinguishable from the general population
- Verbal disfluency in spontaneous speech is poor evidence of cognitive decline
This is important because some commentary about Biden's cognition rests on observations of speech disfluency. The disfluency is well-explained by lifelong stutter; it tells us little about underlying cognitive ability either way.
What we can and cannot honestly conclude
The honest answer to "what is Joe Biden's IQ":
- It has never been measured by a clinical IQ test that has been made public
- His academic record (lower-half of class at Delaware and Syracuse Law, but completed law school and passed the bar) suggests an IQ in the high-average to above-average range
- Cognitive screenings (MoCA) reportedly within normal range, but those are screenings, not IQ measurements
- Speech patterns are not reliable indicators of cognitive ability — they reflect speech disorders, fatigue, and stress more than g-factor
Anyone publishing a specific number ("Biden's IQ is X") is making it up. As with Elon Musk, Albert Einstein, or any other public figure who never took a verified test, retrospective IQ estimation has wide uncertainty bands and is not a credible exercise.
