Why we bother writing these
A number with no test behind it is not data, it is a rumour with a decimal point. Einstein’s 160, the presidential “IQ” scores, the national league tables — each of these has a traceable origin, and in nearly every case the origin is an estimate, a screening tool for something else entirely, or a dataset far too thin to carry the weight put on it.
