What abstract reasoning measures
Abstract reasoning is your ability to find the rule inside unfamiliar material and use it — to look at 3, 6, 12, 24 and see “doubling,” or at a row of shapes and sense what comes next. Because it leans on working things out rather than on what you already know, psychologists treat it as a window onto fluid intelligence, and it sits at the centre of most IQ tests.
The questions above sample the common families: arithmetic and geometric number sequences, letter patterns based on alphabet position, odd-one-out items, simple numeric analogies, and short verbal logic. They are not figural matrix puzzles — those appear in the full test — but they exercise the same habit of mind: read the pattern, name the rule, predict the next step.
How to get better at these
Two things help most. First, build a small mental checklist for sequences — is the step constant, growing, doubling, halving, alternating, or based on squares and cubes? Running through it quickly turns a blank stare into a method. Second, slow down on the first two or three terms; the rule almost always reveals itself there, and rushing past them is the most common reason people miss otherwise easy items.
Be honest with yourself about what practice does, though. It makes you quicker and calmer with these specific formats, which is worth real points on test day. It is not a reliable way to raise your underlying intelligence — the research on far transfer from puzzle drills to general ability is weak. Use this as a warm-up, not a workout for your IQ.
