Spatial reasoning is your ability to hold a shape in your mind and act on it — to turn it, flip it, continue its pattern, or see the squares hidden inside a grid. Because it works on novel figures rather than learned facts, it is one of the cleanest windows onto fluid intelligence, and it is exactly what figural matrix puzzles — the heart of many IQ tests — are designed to tap.
The questions above mix the main types: mental rotation (matching a turned figure), reflection (spotting the mirror image), series (continuing a rotating pattern), and counting (finding every square or rectangle in a figure). The key idea running through them is the difference between a rotation, which keeps a shape’s handedness, and a reflection, which flips it.
How to get better at these
The single most useful move is to name the change: ask whether a figure has been rotated or mirrored. A rotated shape can always be turned back to match the original; a mirrored one never can, no matter how you spin it — so the moment you see a flipped version, you can rule it in or out instantly. For rotation items, lock onto one distinctive feature (the longest arm, a corner) and track only that as you turn the figure; trying to hold the whole shape at once is what makes these feel hard. For counting, work in sizes — all the 1×1s, then the 2×2s — so you never lose your place.
One honest note: spatial tasks, especially mental rotation, are the ones where practice shows the most visible gains. That improvement is real and useful, but it lives mostly in the trained format — treat it as a sharper skill, not a higher IQ.
